A Cheese and Wine Party

You could say I am a cheese and wine party expert. For example; there was the one time my boyfriend and I may or may not have smuggled boxed wine and goldfish crackers onto a missions trip and snuck off to set up hammocks down by the river to consume them. Or the time I invited a group of friends to my 30th birthday cheese and wine party on Bellingham Bay… like, actually on the Bay, in canoes and kayaks with 3 foot waves rolling in at us. Like I said, expert.

So you are probably wondering, Megan, what has been your latest and greatest cheese and wine party? Well I am glad you asked! Most recently I was invited to carry a 50 pound backpack for 20 miles, on a 3 day wilderness trip and only about 5 of those miles were off trail! So naturally I thought this would be the perfect time to add extra weight to my pack to have an amazing cheese and wine party.

Being Labor Day weekend, our first goal was to get as far away as possible from all other people. The trail head being within 2 hours of Seattle, this goal was not for the faint of heart. Nat, Chris and I trudged 8 miles on trail, 4 miles off trail and gained over 3000 ft in elevation in the first day. We all reached our breaking point in the last half mile, descending talus fields and never feeling like we would actually come to the edge of the alpine lake.

What a talus field looks like. But definitely not the one described above, because I was not smiling climbing down that one.  Photo cred: Chris

But man, once we got there the wine was well worth the weight and wait! We found a campsite right on the water and were able to enjoy the whole lake to ourselves. Nat and Chris are pros at this kind of stuff and brought proper smoked gouda and were gracious enough to share some with me, because ya know, I brought stringed cheese.

That’s right, cheese, wine and this view! Photo cred: Chris

I haven’t even told you about the packrafts!!! I guess that will just have to be another posts, but the long and short of it is that dreams really do come true!
